Soon in East Paris a scientific and technical Pole to meet the challenges of the sustainable city

One in two inhabitants of the globe lives in an urban environment. Transport means, built-up areas and energy consumption in the city are together responsible for a major portion of the greenhouse effect. As time goes on, we increasingly face the challenge of building a sustainable urban civilization : offering quality urban services for all, moderating the use of raw materials, water and energy, mitigating nuisances to the environment and controlling the as-yet unknown risks facing our society.

Paris-Est scientific and technical pole is a pole of excellence and innovation to meet the challenges of the sustainable city. Education, training, research and engineering unite on the Cité Descartes in Marne-la-Vallée to discuss topics relating to tomorrow’s towns and help implement the commitments made at the Grenelle Environment Round Table.

On the sustainable city, the pole will consist in 1,500 researchers, engineers and PhD students from dependent organizations from the French Ministry for Sustainable Development, schools of higher education, institutes and the university of Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée.

It will be one of the world’s leading centers on urban planning topics and will place great emphasis on the kind of inter-disciplinary work that alone enables to foster sustainable development and design.
